2011 KLICKITAT “Margerum Ranch Vineyard” Pinot Gris, American
(100 cases produced)
This is our first estate Pinot Gris in quite some time and the 2011 Pinot Gris is absolutely gorgeous and the first estate wine since the 2008 vintage. We had had a succession of frosts that have decimated the crop. Margerum Ranch Vineyard is located in a very marginal place for successfully growing vinifera. When we do get a crop the grapes are physiologically ripe with very low sugar. The resulting wine is more Austrian in style and structure – there is a slight sweetness backed with intense acidity – making it a perfect by the glass wine and a great accompaniment with seafood and spicy Asian cuisine. This is Pinot Gris that is grown on our red basalt soils overlooking the Klickitat River. Our vineyard in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountains redefines the envelope of where cool climate grapes can be grown. The wine is exceptionally lean, tight and clean. As fragrant as the orchard in bloom it is matched by intense aromas of pears, honey and minerality and flint; it tastes and finishes very dry (although there is a touch of residual sugar in the wine) and its tart acid demands bottle age. pH = 3.14, TA = 8.8, Alcohol = 12.86%
