J.L. Vergnon Confidence 2002

2002 CONFIDENCE BRUT NATURE Grand Cru (Six Pack)               

I was dining at Les Crayeres and I had a bottle of J.L. Vergnon Confidence Brut Nature - it was one of the most outstanding wines I have ever had in my life. After visiting the property and spending the day with Christophe CONSTANT I was converted. Christophe asked me “Do you add sugar to your wine when you bottle it?”  I of course said “No.”  He responded “Either do I.”  The wine explodes in the mouth with mineral, steel and flint. The creamy mousse has flavors of yeast with a touch of toast. It is rich, but also austere and structured.  It has a deep, vinous style, with understated power and grace. The lemon verbena, toast and honey aromas and flavors are propelled by the well integrated composition and super fine flavors.  This will age for 20 years or more.  Not for everybody but certainly an extraordinary creation for true Champagne lovers. Christophe makes the wine first and then he makes Champagne - a concept that seems obvious but that is often ignored by most Champagne houses. This is extraordinary product. While most will enjoy the pure elegance that is the Grand Cru Brut the wine that ranks as one of the best I have EVER had is the non-dosage Confidence. - DM
